Memorial Day Weekend
This solemn weekend was never meant to simply be about grilling, parties, sales, or celebrating the beginning of summer.
This Weekend is about the men and women of the Armed Forces who fought and died in war for this country. The ones who never came home. The ones whose families received a knock on the door, a folded flag, and a lifetime of memories and grief.
Some volunteered to serve because they loved this country and believed it was their duty. Others were drafted, sent to distant lands far away from home, and fought because their nation called upon them to do so and some lost their lives in training accidents – preparing. Regardless of how they got there, they stood their ground beside the people next to them and paid the ultimate sacrifice. They all should be remembered.
The United States has existed for nearly 250 years, and throughout much of that time our nation has been involved in conflict or war in some form. Historians estimate America has spent well over 90% of its existence involved in military conflict somewhere around the world. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died in those wars. Estimates range from over 650,000 to more than 1.2 million American service members lost in combat or military service since the Revolutionary War.
World War II alone claimed over 405,000 American lives. The Civil War approximately 620,000. Vietnam took over 58,000 Americans. Korea over 36,000. World War I over 116,000. And the list continues through every generation.
These men and women demonstrated honor, courage, and commitment long before those words became slogans. They endured fear, exhaustion, pain, separation from family, and the brutal realities of war so others could live free.
Memorial Day is about remembering them. Respecting them. Teaching younger generations who they were and what they sacrificed. It is about understanding that freedom has always carried a price paid by someone else.
I appreciate the respect, but this day is not about those of us who survived. It is about the ones who did not make it back. The ones still standing watch in places like Arlington, Normandy, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and countless forgotten battlefields around the world.
This weekend, enjoy your family. Spend time with the people you love. But take a moment to stop, reflect, and remember the fallen. Say their names. Tell their stories. Honor their sacrifice.
Because Memorial Day belongs to them.
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13
